Bulgaria & Romania Took Their Final Step to Enter Schengen Area

The European Council, under the leadership of its Spanish presidency, announced its decision to expand the Schengen area to include Bulgaria and Romania. 

As per a statement issued by the European Commission, controls on air and sea borders are set to be lifted starting in the initial months of 2024. Additionally, discussions regarding lifting controls on land orders will continue this year.  The European Commission expressed its belief that the enlargement of the Schengen area will enhance the European Union’s strength within its borders and on global platforms. The commission warmly welcomed the inclusion of Bulgaria and Romania in this area. 

Both neighboring countries have joined the Schengen area to make travel easier for people in these countries. To make decisions for the European Union, the council said that from 31st March 2024, there won’t be checks on people traveling by sea or air to these countries. They also share plans to stop checks at the land borders.

The European Commission thinks this step is great for the EU because it will make it stronger both inside and outside. The Schengen area already lets people move freely between 26 countries. Now, with the joining of Bulgaria and Romania, it’s even bigger. It is the biggest free-travel zone in the world. It gives enough space to move around 400 million people freely there.

President of European Council Congratulates Both Countries

Everyone in the council agreed to join both countries. The Commission visited their borders many times to make sure they were ready. The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, sent his congratulations to Bulgaria and Romania. He said it’s a big achievement for the people of these countries, and they can move freely now. The President of the European Commission also praised the decision. 

The leaders of both countries are also happy about this union. The foreign minister of Romania thanked everyone for their support. Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister also celebrated this achievement. Overall, this decision is a big deal for both countries, as it makes travel easier for citizens. It also shows that they are trusted members of the European Union.
