Would you name your kid after a cyclone “Biporjoy”?

People are insanely creative and opportunist when it comes to naming their kids. It has occurred in past well as it happens today. In a recent news a Gujrati couple who was forced to evacuate because of cyclone. They are blessed with a baby girl recently. Just to stay relevant and quirky, they named their kid ‘Biporjoy’. They are staying at a shelter in Jakhau, Kutch district of Gujarat.

Meanwhile, little Biparjoy now joins a unique list of kids named after cyclones such as Titli, Fani and Gulab.

However, the little girl may not feel too overjoyed when she grows up and finds out that ‘Biparjoy’ literally means disaster. So named by Bangladesh, where cyclone first swirled up, for its sheer ferocity and the wanton destruction its likely to cause once it makes landfall.

The strange trend of naming children after natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes is not new. In Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur, a newborn baby was named Corona during the height of Covid-19. Similarly, two other children were named after the deadly fever in Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa district. A Rajasthani couple, stranded in Tripura during the Covid-lockdown, shocked their baby by naming them “Lockdown”.

Other weird names

UK parents name their child after the Indian dish ‘Pakora’. The Captain’s Table is a famous restaurant in Newtownabbey in Ireland. The couple who were quite frequent to Captain’s Table has named their child after the Indian cuisine. The restaurant announced the exciting news with a heartfelt post on Facebook.

The popularity of names is cyclical. Unique names become popular, but then parents start to look for other names that are less popular to make their children stand out more. This, in turn, makes those popular names less popular, until they eventually disappear.
