Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir appointed as New COAS

President Dr. Arif Alvi on Thursday approved the summary sent by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to appoint Lt. Gen. Syed Asim Munir as the next Army Chief ( COAS ) and Lt. Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza as the new Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).

In an official statement issued by the Secretariat of the President of the State, it is said that the President of the State, Dr. Arif Alvi, has immediately promoted Lieutenant General Sahir Shamshad Mirza to the rank of General and appointed him as the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff from November 27, 2022. A staff committee has been appointed. Said.

The statement said that the promotions and appointments are made under Article 243 (4) (a) and (b) and 48 (1) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan read with Sections 8-A and 8-D of the Constitution of Pakistan. Later, the newly appointed Army Chief and CJCSC also met the Prime Minister. In a statement, PTI congratulated both the four-star officers and wished them well.

On Thursday, Defense Minister Khawaja Mohammad Asif told reporters that Munir’s nomination as army chief was “on merit, in accordance with the law and the constitution”. He said he hoped Alavis would not make important appointments “controversial” and would ratify Sharif’s decision without delay.

The important appointments in the army were first announced by Information Minister Maryam Aurangzeb after a special cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Unlike in the past, the government did not wait for the President to sign the summary before announcing the decision.

Azeem Chaudhry, a senior political analyst, told The Associated Press that Munir held key positions under Bajwa, including the head of military intelligence. He said that he hoped that the new army chief would keep the army away from politics as per Bajwa’s policy.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee is an inter-services forum that works for coordination between the three armed forces. The CJCSC also serves as the Principal Military Advisor to the Prime Minister and the National Command Authority.
