PCB Reappointed Babar Azam as Captain in White Ball Cricket


On Sunday, Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi appointed Babar Azam as the captain of the Pakistan men’s White Ball cricket team. He will lead the team in both ODI and T20 formats. 

The selection of Babar Azam to lead Pakistan’s One Day International (ODI) and Twenty-20 (T20) cricket teams marks a significant turn of events in the cricketing landscape of the nation. 

With the recommendation of Pakistan’s Cricket Board selection committee, Babar has been selected as the captain for white-ball cricket. The decision to replace Shaheen Shah Afridi comes ahead of Pakistan’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand. It is scheduled to begin on April 18, 2024. 

This announcement comes after a period of transition for Babr Azam, who previously held the ODI captaincy but was temporarily removed from the position after Pakistan’s loss in the 2023 World Cup. With a fresh vote of confidence, Babar Azam takes leadership once again and will lead the team in both ODI and T20 formats.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced this during a press conference held at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. He also shared the plans to reorganize the selection committee to ensure fair and inclusive decision-making. 

The committe will now include seven members with equal authorities. Selected members are Asad Shafiq, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Yousaf, and Abdul Razzaq, in addition to the team captain and head coach. 

Highlighting the importance of accountability, Naqvi emphasized that the selection committee would bear responsibility for team performance. He also said the role of captain in team decisions in pivotal. Moreover, Naqvi shared new srategies to set up a permanent group of coaches who will work with the selection committee. This group will use their knowledge of player dynamics and performance to make informed decisions.
