On November 5, 2023, Bulgarians were treated to a breathtaking celestial show as rare red northern lights, or aurora borealis, graced the night sky. The typically green and blue hues of the auroras took on a vibrant red, creating a mesmerizing and unusual spectacle.

This celestial event follows an earlier occurrence of the aurora borealis in Ladakh, India, earlier this year. Marking the first time the phenomenon graced the skies of the country. The northern lights have historically fascinated humanity and are typically associated with geomagnetic storms. It is caused by disturbances in the Earth’s magnetic field.

Why Does It Happen?

While the northern lights are commonly observed near the Earth’s magnetic poles, occasionally. They make their presence known in more temperate regions, as seen in Bulgaria. This celestial spectacle arises from the interaction of solar wind particles from the sun, guided by Earth’s magnetic field toward the polar areas.

The unique colors of the auroras depend on the specific gas molecules encountered in the atmosphere during these interactions. Oxygen emissions contribute to the characteristic green light, while encounters with nitrogen result in the striking red glow that illuminated the Bulgarian sky on this historic night.
