Tourists Thrilled by Kalash Choimus Winter Festival

Choimus, also known as Chitirmas, marks the Kalash people’s new year and celebrates their unique faith and traditions. Tourists get to participate in some traditions, like dancing around the fire or joining a communal feast, becoming part of the festive spirit.

In a bid to promote peace in Chitral, the Kalash tribe’s winter festival, known as Choimus, has commenced with immense enthusiasm. Believed to be over 2,000 years old, Choimus predates Islam and has roots in Indo-Iranian traditions. However, it celebrates the victory of light over darkness and the renewal of life.

The festival honors the Kalash pantheon of gods and spirits. With offerings made to Shomal (the supreme god), Jestak (the goddess of fertility), and Balomain (the protector god).

The remarkable Choimus festival of the Kalash tribe is located in Chitral. It has officially kicked off in the picturesque valleys of Bamboret, Birir, and Rumbur in Lower Chitral.

This festival, which began on December 16, will run until December 22. During this time, various customs and traditions will be celebrated, including animal sacrifices, cooking various flour-based dishes, lighting bonfires, and more. A highlight for young men is the “bushas” competition, where they climb greased wooden poles to reach a crown of flowers, testing their strength and agility.

However, a significant number of both residents and foreign tourists are flocking to the valley to witness this historic celebration in the Kalash valley.

An Un-Usual Rule

In a related development, YouTubers and vloggers have been prohibited from recording videos during the Choimus winter festival.

This decision was made during a meeting to discuss security arrangements for the festival. It was led by Qaiser Raza of the Chitral Scouts 146 Wing at the Bamboret Officer’s Mess.

The gathering was attended by representatives from the police, tourism department, media, and relevant institutions. Along with local elders, the Qazi of the Kailash tribe, and hotel association representatives.
