New Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that his country will strongly support the Palestinians. He will strive to restore the freedom and independence of Palestine as an independent and sovereign country within the borders of 1967.
Lula da Silva, the most famous politician leader in Latin America, has triumphantly returned as Brazil´s President for the third time in a ceremony held at the National Congress in Brasília. Just one day after left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took office in January, Brazil has announced a fundamental shift in its diplomacy toward the Palestinian cause, where it has topped again at the forefront of Brazil’s political scene, after years of absence due to Bolsonaro’s pro-Israel policy. The new Brazilian president has all the reasons to get worldwide limelight.
Since the beginning of Lula´s election campaign, he has declared that “Palestinians deserve Brazil´s full attention and solidarity”. He stressed that the Palestinian people have the right to live in a “free and sovereign state”, adding that he will work to re-establish the leading role of Brazilian foreign policy in the mediation of conflicts and of peoples’ right to defend themselves.

At the reception ceremony for world leaders, Brazilian President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva assured the Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Affairs, Riyad Al-Maliki, that his country will stand firm in its support of Palestinian rights and will work for the restoration of Palestine’s freedom and independence within the 1967 borders. Over a 40-minute conversation, President Lula said that his country still commits to supporting the efforts of the State of Palestine in all international forums.
More recently, Lula met with the Palestinian community in Brazil while donning the iconic Palestinian keffiyeh, a black and white checkered scarf representing resistance against Israeli occupation. “Palestinians deserve our full attention and solidarity,” said Lula during the meeting in June, as quoted by Middle East Monitor.
Palestine’s reaction
Lula’s win was widely celebrated by Palestinians globally, who described the development as a victory for the cause, especially amid concerns of Bolsonaro’s plans to move the Brazilian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Authorities in Palestine were quick to congratulate Lula on his latest win, with the foreign ministry describing it as “a victory for democracy”.
“We congratulate the Brazilian people who voted for the security of its future and the future of humanity,” the Palestinian foreign ministry said in a statement on Monday.
