Oil and Gas Reserves Discovered in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) announced success at the Chanda-7 well in Kohat district. This well is yielding both crude oil and gas reserves, along with some LPG. OGDCL has also found gas reserves in the Togh-02 well

In a significant development for Pakistan’s energy sector, new oil and gas reserves have been discovered in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This discovery comes alongside restored production in Sindh thanks to the installation of modern pumps. The TAL block is an oil field located in the Kohat district and this is the 13th discovery of MOL in Pakistan in 21 years.

The Oil and Gas Development Company (OGDCL) announced the finding in a letter sent to the Pakistan Stock Exchange. The Chandna-7 well, located in Kohat district, yielded promising results:

  • 305 barrels of crude oil reserves
  • 2.5 million cubic feet of gas reserves
  • 3 metric tons of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)

“By the grace of Almighty Allah, OGDCL, the operator of the Kohat Exploration License, governed under the Pakistan Petroleum & Exploration Rules, 2001, located in the District of Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has discovered hydrocarbons in the exploratory segment of the Togh-02 (Slant) well in the Lumshiwal-II Formation, on sole risk between OGDCL (75%) and Saif Energy Limited (SEL) (25%),” read the notice.

The well is already connected to a processing plant via a 1.3 km pipeline. Moreover, gas supply to the Sui Northern Gas Company has begun.

Other Successful Endeavors

Meanwhile, in Sindh, the use of modern pumps at eight wells in the Kunar area has successfully restored oil and gas production. Notably, the Kunar-8 wells are now producing 540 barrels of crude oil per day.

Last year, OGDCL discovered an oil and gas reservoir the in district Sanghar of Sindh province. Moreover, according to the OGDCL statement, the oil and gas reservoir was discovered in Pandhi area of Sanghar.

“The joint venture of Bitrism Block comprising of Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) as operator (95 percent) and Government Holdings (Pvt) Limited (5 Percent carried) has discovered oil and gas from its exploratory well Pandhi # 01, which is located in district Sanghar, Sindh province.”

Moreover, these developments are a major boost to Pakistan’s economy, offering the potential to increase domestic oil and gas production and reduce reliance on imports. The discovery in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is particularly significant as it opens a new frontier for exploration in the country.
