India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been crowned ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2024. Bumrah took 71 wickets in 13 Tests, making him the leading wicket-taker in Test cricket for 2024. He maintained an exceptional economy rate of 2.96 and a bowling average of 14.92.

He dominated the bowling charts without equal. He finished the year well ahead of England’s Gus Atkinson, who claimed 52 wickets. Bumrah’s average of 14.92 and strike rate of 30.1 were the best among bowlers with 70+ wickets in a calendar year.

Both at home and away, Bumrah bowled spells that proved decisive in winning the matches. His highlights of 2024 include:

  • Against England (Home): Claimed 19 wickets in a five-Test series, leading India to a 4-1 victory.
  • Against South Africa (Away): Took 8 wickets in a historic win in Cape Town.
  • Border-Gavaskar Trophy (Away): Registered an astounding 32 wickets, earning the Player of the Series award as India secured a 3-2 series win against Australia.

During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah surpassed 200 Test wickets, becoming the 12th Indian to reach this milestone. Remarkably, he is the only bowler in history with over 200 wickets and an average below 20 (19.40).

Legacy and Recognition

The ICC praised Bumrah’s ability to excel in diverse conditions, acknowledging his vital role in India’s rise in the ICC World Test Championship standings.
