Sednaya Prison was once referred to as the “Human Slaughterhouse“. It was a military detention facility located 30 kilometers north of Damascus, Syria. Known for its brutal treatment of detainees, the prison was a grim symbol of repression under the Assad regime. Constructed in the 1980s, it became infamous for torture, mass executions, and severe human rights abuses, especially during Syria’s civil war.
A Place of Horror
Reports from human rights organizations revealed harrowing accounts of abuse. Inmates endured beatings, sexual violence, starvation, and forced labor. Amnesty International estimates that between 2011 and 2015, up to 13,000 people lost their lives there. Survivors described “welcome parties,” brutal beatings inflicted on new arrivals. Moreover, authorities subject such prisoners to extreme torture methods, including “shabeh,” in which detainees were hung by their wrists and beaten.
“Apparently, every day, 50 people were brought out and told that they were going to be taken to some kind of civilian prison when they were brought out here to be hung,” a reporter said.

Rebel forces captured the prison on December 8, 2024, amid the Assad regime’s collapse. Videos of prisoners emerging from underground cells. Some unaware that the regime had fallen, sparked a mix of relief and disbelief. Women and children detained in the prison’s underground sections were among those released. Rebels discovered chilling evidence, including salt rooms used to preserve bodies and a rumored crematorium.
