iPhone 16: A Tough Buy for Many in Pakistan

The iPhone 16 is a highly anticipated phone. However, it may be out of reach for many consumers due to its high price. In the US, the iPhone 16 starts at $799, but in Pakistan, the price is expected to be much higher due to PTA taxes. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are expected to cost over PKR 600,000 inclusive of tax.

The highly anticipated iPhone 16 series is set to be revealed at Apple’s “Glowtime” event today. Fans across the world waiting for the latest technological marvel from Apple. The new iPhones are expected to feature cutting-edge advancements, including enhanced AI capabilities, upgraded cameras, larger screens, and innovative design elements. However, while excitement runs high globally, the reality of owning the latest iPhone in Pakistan is far more complicated.

iPhone’s Launch and Global Prices

With prices starting at $799 (PKR 223,000) in the US, the iPhone 16 is priced similarly to its predecessors. However, the situation in Pakistan is quite different. Due to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) taxes and customs duties, the prices of these phones are expected to skyrocket. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, in particular, may cross the PKR 600,000 mark, putting them out of reach for many consumers.

This steep price includes additional taxes levied by the PTA for registration and clearance of imported mobile phones. As a result, owning an iPhone in Pakistan has become a luxury that many tech enthusiasts and everyday consumers struggle to afford.

Expected Features and Innovations

The iPhone 16 series is rumoured to come with several significant upgrades. These include:

  • Larger Screens: Pro models are expected to have even bigger screens than before. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro features a 6.3-inch display and the Pro Max boasts a massive 6.9-inch screen.
  • Upgraded Cameras: The Pro models will likely get 5x telephoto lenses, ensuring superior zoom capabilities and high-quality photography.
  • AI-Powered Features: Apple’s new AI platform, “Apple Intelligence,” will enable new ways to interact with the phone. Such as enhanced Siri functionality and AI-generated images and emojis.
  • New Buttons: Rumors suggest the inclusion of an Action Button across all models. Moreover, a Capture Button on Pro variants is specifically designed for easier photography and video recording.
  • Colours: Regarding finishes, the iPhone 16 is expected to be available in five colour options: Black, White, Pink, Blue and Green.

For most iPhone enthusiasts in Pakistan, the iPhone 16 will remain a dream. Despite Apple’s technological prowess and the iPhone’s status as a symbol of innovation, the high cost compounded by government taxes makes it unaffordable for a majority. For those who do manage to afford the latest model, it will likely be considered a significant investment, if not a status symbol.
